Latecomers cause $76 m loss to BPOs

Filed under:

NEW DELHI : Indian BPOs lose $76 million annually due to latecomers. Nearly 20-25% of BPO workforce reaches late by an average of half an hour every day. To ensure uninterrupted workflow, BPOs have to extend previous shifts and pay overtime, which in turn is billed to the clients, causing losses.

Voice based processes, which carry an average billing rate of $7 per hour, suffer the most due to latecomers. Currently, there are about 4.15 lakh employees in the IT-ITeS sector.

Taking an average of 20% latecomers each day of the year (BPOs have a five-day week), the losses amount to $75.53 million per year. The figure, though, is conservative since many of them have now shifted to non-voice and transaction based processes which carry average billing rates of $17-$25 per hour.

Property investors in India forced to sell at a loss by global downturn

Young property investors in India are selling at a loss because they can no longer afford to pay the interest and costs associated with owning multiple properties. The global downturn has set off a panic reaction, inducing investors to close deals at losses. It has become almost impossible for those who invested in real estate last year to exit the scene as the downturn has deepened and the prices being quoted do not even cover the purchase costs and interest expenses. Typical is 35-year-old Rahul Verma, who works with a Noida-based IT company. He bought a flat in Greater Noida early

Mandis loss is the farmers gain

Mandis loss is the farmers gain Retailers like Reliance are buying bulk produce directly from farmers. New retail chains like Reliance and corporate agri-buyers like ITC are shaking up the traditional vegetable and fruit market. By buying in bulk directly on the farmers doorstep, and booking future harvests as well, they are taking business from the traditional mandis. This has caused a sharp drop in supplies to the traditional wholesale markets — and is driving up prices there. Those gaining from this are farmers, who now get a better and, indeed, an assured price, for their produce. More :

BPOs now go in for multi-city back-ups

Move over data security, BPOs have got a new buzzword — disaster recovery. And it’s proving to be a money-spinner too. Americans as well as Europeans are today willing to pay a premium of 20% or higher to split the work farmed out to India into two or more cities. And insiders say that banks, finance and insurance companies are pushing it hard. Having tasted the fury of Mumbai rains, clients are no longer satisfied with the outsourcing vendor having a facility in two cities, but are insisting on splitting each process into more than one city. And BPO
