Its perhaps President Pratibha Patils first controversial decision since taking over. On Wednesday, President Patil put her seal of approval on Justice Jagdish Bhallas promotion as Chief Justice of the Himachal High Court.
The move comes just five months after her predecessor APJ Abdul Kalam refused to do so.
Kalam had returned the file to the government over allegations that Justice Bhallas family was involved in a land scam worth crores.

Allahabad, Feb 01: The Allahabad High Court yesterday dismissed all petitions filed by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Neera Yadav in the Noida plot allotment case. Dimissing the petitions of Yadav the division bench consisting of Chief Justice A N Ray and Justice Ashok Bhushan, vacated the interim orders passed on the petitions and remitted back the records of the case to special judge, CBI. HCL, NEC open new facility in Noida
HCL Technologies (HCL), in association with Japan-based NEC Corporation, has inaugurated a new facility - NEC HCL System Technologies in Noida. According to a release issued by HCL to the BSE today, the new facility has been set up with an investment of $5 million, and is spread over 20,000 sq.ft at Logix Techno Park, Noida. Govt to file reply on corruption charges against IAS officers
Lucknow : The Allahabad High Court today directed the State Governemnt to file its reply on the PIL seeking a CBI probe into the charges of disproportionate assets against 11 senior IAS officers in the state. The division bench in Lucknow comprising Justice Jagadish Bhalla and Justice O N Khandelwal has fixed August 8 next for further hearing of the matter. The PIL filed by a local scribe has alleged that the State Vigilence Department, the Economic Offences Wing and the CBCID had investigated the charges of disproportionate assets against these 11 IAS officers and had recommended action against them. Congress alleges bias in Noida land deals
The Congress on Sunday named a former chief justice of India and a serving judge whose relatives benefited from land improperly allotted by the UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. The allotments had been made almost two years ago but were later cancelled by the UP government after protests on the transparency of the deal and questions being raised that it was in return for undue favours.
