This is very good reason why India ranks so low on the global indices of doing business. It’s one-and-a-half years since Adobe India had sought to buy land in Noida to expand its largest research base outside the US. But the district authorities are yet to decide on a master plan, only after which they would process the application.
Land acquisition was integral to a $100-million expansion plan of the Indian arm of $3.6-billion Adobe Systems. The company now says it’s open to looking for greener pastures outside India.
The Noida campus, along with its centre in Bangalore, makes for Adobe Systems’ largest R&D centre outside the US. Adobe had earmarked $50 million for expanding its Noida facility, by setting up a centre of the same scale next to its three-acre campus in Sector 25A. It had also set aside a similar fund to set up its own centre in Bangalore. The Bangalore centre operates out of a rented property now. In both the cases, land issues are thwarting its ambitions.
